Zak Sandler is a musical theater songwriter based in NYC.
Zak participated as a composer in the 2015 Johnny Mercer Songwriters Project at Northwestern University with Andrew Lippa, Craig Carnelia, and Lari White. His newest work is SOMETHING ABOUT ME, the songs of four millennials wrestling with the real world, the perils of modern dating, and what “crazy” really means. Zak and longtime collaborator Adele Powers are also writing a musical adaptation of THE CITY OF EMBER, based on the novel by Jeanne DuPrau. Zak and Adele’s previous show, ANTHEM, enjoyed a critically-acclaimed run at the 2014 New York International Fringe Festival and at the Chicago Musical Theater Festival. Other writing credits include A QUESTION OF FAITH, featuring his hit song, “Beyond Kansas,” and OFFICE SPACE: THE MUSICAL, co-written with Greg Edwards.
Zak’s awards include the Shen Prize for Musical Theater Composition and the Fenno Heath Award at Yale for writing a new Yale song. Zak recently won first place at “Tune in Time,” an improvisational songwriting game show at the York Theater Company.
Zak has music directed Off-Broadway at The Public Theatre, Soho Playhouse, and La Mama, as well as regionally at Goodspeed, Dallas Theater Center, Lyric Theatre of Oklahoma, and Signature Theatre (DC). Zak orchestrated the Atlantic Stages production of TOKIO CONFIDENTIAL, now available on CD. He also orchestrated a four-piece reduction of SWEENEY TODD that has been performed across the country and in Canada.
