About the composer
Ben Bonnema is a composer-lyricist and playwright whose work has been featured in Variety, Wired and The New York Times. He wrote book, music & lyrics to Adult Swim's PETER PANIC, a musical video game that's been played by over a half million people (developed by James Marion). He contributed additional sound design and composition to Punchdrunk's award-winning show SLEEP NO MORE. His slumber party musical, BOYS WHO TRICKED ME, was called "heart-healing musical theatre" by Joshua Barone of the New York Times. He's worked on Broadway and beyond, including ON YOUR FEET (dir. Jerry Mitchell), FEBRUARY HOUSE (by Gabriel Kahane and Seth Bockley), and supplied additional orchestrations for Ana Gasteyer's album I'm Hip.
Ben earned his MFA from NYU's Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. He wrote his graduate thesis, THE LOST GIRL, with Arianna Rose, which was selected from over sixty musicals to receive a developmental reading at the Buck Hill Skytop Musical Festival in August 2015. The show also had a reading in Hamburg in May 2015, sponsored by the PHANTOM OF THE OPERA theatre. One-Acts include SLASH (words by Christopher Staskel), which is about Jon Snow and Jesse Pinkman as lovers, and GLAMDROMEDA (book by Bryce Norbitz, lyrics by Christopher Staskel), commissioned by UglyRhino with a run at the Brooklyn Lyceum in 2013.
Ben's work has been performed throughout New York City, including Lincoln Center's Bruno Walter Auditorium, NY City Center's Lobby Project, 54 Below, Joe's Pub, the Brooklyn Lyceum, the Frederick Loewe Theatre, the Gene Frankel Theatre, and Littlefield. He was awarded the 2011 ASCAP Foundation Frederick Loewe Award, as well as Artist Residencies at the Ucross Foundation, Virginia Center for the Creative Arts, and Two River Theatre. This year he was a 2016 Jonathan Larson Grant Finalist.
He's written theme songs for several webseries, including THE AGENDA and BARDOLOGY. Currently, he is writing ONE WAY with Christopher Staskel, a musical about a group of people applying to go on a one-way trip to Mars. The Musical Theatre Factory will produce its first full reading at Playwrights Horizons in May 2016. He's a proud member of ASCAP, the Dramatist Guild, and Local 802. He is currently Marc Shaiman's assistant.
